In case you missed it., here is a link to today’s story on the 1964-’65 Lanier High School boys basketball team. The Bulldogs went 43-0 that season and won a national championship.
Orsmond Jordan, who went on to coach (and win state championships) at Brinkley and Murrah , was an assistant coach on that Lanier team.
In fact, Jordan was on the bench for the three teams that have the best reported scoring averages of all time.
That Lanier team averaged 96 points per game. (Without a 3-point line).
His Brinkley team in 1970 averaged averaged 94.6 points per game.
His Murrah team in 1991-92 season averaged 94.5 points per game. (That team featured Othella Harrington, Ronnie Henderson and Jessie Pate).
So the obvious question to Jordan: Could that 195 Lanier team beat his 1992 Murrah team?
“That ‘s one of the two things I always get put on the spot about. The other one is who is the best player you ever coached. They are similar. Both were very hard working teams.
This Lanier team might have been a little better. They had to play so much harder every night. Sometimes with the team with Ronnie and Othella, other teams would come in the gym and they knew they were going to get beat by 20 points so we didn’t have to play quite as hard.”
I also asked Jordan about another one of his former players at Murrah: Lindsey Hunter: As you may have heard by now, Hunter was named interim head coach of the Phoenix Suns today.
“That’s good news to me,” said Jordan. “From the time I started taking Lindsey to camp at in seventh and eighth grade, he just always worked hard to improve. It was hard work that got him there. Nobody gave him anything. I’m not surprised because Lindsey was one of those guys that always paid attention. I am not surprised. He worked hard and played hard and won championships. He will do well.”
